Part One

The Orientalist Paintings collection of the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia is among the world’s largest. As a pioneer institution of the Islamic world, the museum seeks to reclaim a heritage that reveals much about the Islamic past. An Orientalist painting is more than a work of art, it also provides insight into people, culture and places of a bygone era. The collection is about what European artists might have seen, rather than what they never could; in other words, it is about their personal reactions to the Islamic world influenced by a European perspective. No restrictions to photography during my visit on 7 Oct 2023.
